Call of Duty: Black Ops Zombies was released on the iOS App Store yesterday on December 1, 2011. The game is a sequel to the first game Call of Duty: Zombies with improved graphics, a Dead-Ops Arcade game mode, and voice chat functionality. While it is an upgrade to the original game, there were some issues with multiplayer lag and its controls.
Black Ops Zombies features the same survival mode as the original where you defend against waves of zombies until you are eventually overrun. As you progress through the waves, you collect money to unlock sections of the map to have access to better weapons and defensible areas. Black Ops Zombies has updated graphics, new weapons, and map. You read it correctly; there was only a single map at release, Kind der Toten. But worry not, there will be another coming with a future game update.
You can play the game solo or in multiplayer mode with up to 4 player co-op. As mentioned earlier, they added in voice chat functionality, so you can talk with your teammates, which is cool. It’s fun to sit back and chat it up with friends, while you are taking down zombies coming for your brains. Playing with more people is definitely fun, but only when it works smoothly and doesn’t crash. We experienced a lot of network lag which made it annoying to play.
Control-wise, the game is similar to the original. They’ve added in the ability to sprint and crouch, but removed an actual fire button. Instead you have to double tap the screen to fire, which was very frustrating at times. Maybe it works better for some, but I had issues getting my guns to fire on more than one occasion.
Dead Ops Arcade Mode
In addition to the survival mode, Activision has added in the Dead-Ops Arcade mode. Dead Ops Arcade is an overhead view, arcade-style shooter with 50-levels of zombie slaying fun. The arcade game mode is designed as a gauntlet where you move from room to room slaying zombies and collecting upgrades and power-ups. The controls are more suited for touch screen interfaces, using dual thumb stick controls. If also features full Game Center leaderboard support, so you can climb the ladder ranks and compete with people around the world on your skill at killing zombies.
If you’re a fan of the original CoD: Zombies and have been waiting on the sequel, this is a great iOS game to pick up with its improved visuals and arcade mode gameplay as long as you don’t mind the network lag issues and control issues. Otherwise, I’d suggest waiting for an update or two for more maps and improvements.
Call of Duty: Black Ops Zombies is available on the iOS App Store for $6.99 USD.
